Rather than heading to Europe we decided to have a month long trip around the SouthWest stopping at places we haven’t really been to before and also spending some time in our favourite places.
First stop was at a lovely rural farm site about 1.5 miles from both Lyme and Charmouth. Walked down to Charmouth on Monday afternoon which is a small and pretty village with a pebble beach (and some dusty sand) We enjoyed an ice-cream on the beach before working our way back up the hill to the camp site.
Tuesday morning we walked back down the hill along some paths across fields and through woodland to Lyme Regis. What a lovely (and obviously affluent!) town. Had a really good walk around and found a takeaway coffee place with great cakes and pastries and sat on a bench overlooking the sea in the warm sunshine ☀️.
Bit more of a wander around before a pint of Proper Job on the sunny terrace of Rock Point.
Back up the hill to the site for late afternoon when I even managed a short run across the fields and a totally overgrown path!
An excellent couple of days and 100% a place to go back to.

Our Pitch was in the top corner of a sloping field but managed to get things reasonably level. One good thing was the gate to the track to walk down to Stoke Gabriel and also for the bus stop to Paignton was right next to us.
Walked down to Stoke Gabriel on the day we arrived which was a small and pretty village right on the river Dart. Had a lovely pint in the local pub and a nice evening on site.
Next morning off we went on the bus to suss out Paignton….. About as far away as possible from everything I like about a town or a seaside town…. Not one thing… A run down tatty seaside town. We did walk down to Goddington beach which was nicer with rows of colourful beach huts but not much more apart from a premier inn, run down pub and a Costa.
Caught the bus back to the site and a night in before heading off to our next site which was located between Polperro and Loo.
Friday 4th and Saturday 5th September 2026

The Tencreek holiday park had a mixture of caravans, seasonal pitches and touring / camping spots. It had a different vibe to most places as there seemed to be mostly permanent / regular visitors plus a large number of campervans. The pitch was on a slope which was difficult to get onto and up onto the ramps due to wet grass. Even on the top level of the ramps we were still sloping down more than I liked.
However, the location was good with just a 2 mile walk into Polperro along the coast path with the usual stunning Cornish coastal views. The town was really pretty with far more shops and pubs etc than you would have first thought. The houses built up the steep sides and in very narrow streets. We had a beer on the roof / garden terrace of the Three Pilchards which had great views over the town and harbour. Overall a very enjoyable afternoon.
The next day we walked the opposite way into Looe, once again along the SWC path. Sarah had been to Looe 30 odd years ago and was trying to remember (somewhat unsuccessfully) where they had stayed. The town and beach area was really nice with lots of different pubs, shops and restaurants etc. Well worth the visit and an enjoyable day. The SWC path through this particular area is quite tough and it was hard work for Sarah still recovering from her hip replacement but we made it back to the site to sit in the sun while listening to the next door vans slightly interesting selection of music….

Lovely site that we had initially intended to stay at for two nights turned into three. Very short walk off the back of the site into Portscatho which is a small but very affluent village which is probably almost entirely made up of holiday homes. Nice little harbour area and beach with a pub, village stores and the now quite famous Hidden Hut.
We spent the first full day on Towan Beach which is about 1.5 miles down the coast path, which I had found during my run the previous evening. The weather was okay but not good enough for me to want to swim even though I had gone prepared!
After a nice evening on site and a good night’s sleep we wandered back down to Portscatho and sat on the village beach with a coffee from the Hidden Hut before a bit more of an explore and a pasty from the village stores.
Next morning we were off to Falmouth for a couple of nights via Waitrose in Truro for a much needed food shop (spent too much!)
